Review : Toyota Avensis T250 ( 2004 – 2009 )

Toyota Avensis T250, my arch-enemy. Toyota Avensis T250, the official car of people over 40, who have a seat cover made out of wooden beads. Toyota Avensis T250, the car of people who sincerely laugh at sitcoms.

I’ve said it all the time and I’ll say it again: The cars I hate the most are the Toyota Avensis T250 and the VW Golf IV. I hate the VW Golf IV because it brainwashed the europeans in such a way that all we know is VW and the universal answer to anything is “1.9 TDI”. I hate the Toyota Avensis T250 because it represents a car built for men over 45, wearing mustaches, berets and tell dad jokes at which only they laugh at. When I look at the Toyota Avensis T250, all I can think of is “4.5 meters of the car and that’s it”. It doesn’t express anything to me. It’s just a car, made for those devoid of imagination or aspiration in life.

So why do I bother writing about the Toyota Avensis T25 in this case?

Chiefly because of these 2 engines: the 1ZZ-FE of 127 horsepower and 1AZ-FSE of 145 horsepower. If you choose one of these two engines, you have a very fast, very reliable and very economical car. Not only are they reliable, but these two engines are notorious for their diesel-like fuel economy. The 1.8 petrol engine can reach 30 mpg in urban driving, without the disadvantages of a diesel engine. Without being miserable in the morning in the cold. Without keeping an eye on the particle filter. As for the other engines, I wish them to loose a piston in a bend.

Toyota Avensis T250 Engines

Petrol

  • 1.6 VVT-i of 109 horsepower – An engine worthy of the boring character of the car. For the kind of person who is not in a hurry because he is caught up in the debate at the radio station. He takes out his hat every time he passes by a church. Occasionally he stops on the side of the road to ask how much a kilogram of watermelon costs.

  • 1.8 VVT-i 1ZZ-FE of 127 horsepower– The most common petrol engine on the Toyota Avensis T250, a legendary engine that offers performance, reliability and low consumption. Unfortunately, you have to buy the rest of the car with it.

  • 2.0 VVT-i 1AZ-FSE of 145 horsepower– The same concept as the 1.8 VVT-i petrol engine, only that here it has more power. A very rare engine instead.

  • 2.4 VVT-i 2AZ-FSE of 161 horsepower– The same 2.0 VVT-i, stretched to 2.4 and with 16 more (beautiful) horsepower. Unfortunately, the typical Toyota Avensis T250 driver does not have fun in life, so this engine was retired faster than Samsung Note 7.

Diesel

  • 2.0 D-4D of 114 and 125 horsepower The same 2.0 D-4D that we are used to and which will retire long after you. If you want absolute reliability, then you have to go for the 114 horsepower version, the ancient 1CD-FTV that made its debut all the way back on the original Rav4.

  • 2.2 D-4D of 150 horsepower Marginally faster and several times more expensive on taxes and insurance. If however 25 horsepower make a difference in your life and you think you will turn a simple car like the Toyota Avensis T250 into a race car, you can buy this version without worry.

  • 2.2 D-CAT with 177 horsepower You would think that a Toyota Avensis T250 with 177 horsepower is a comically fast car. And you would be right. A comically fast car on the way to the repair shop because this engine suffers from serious issues with the head gasket that burns every 100 meters. And the repair usually costs more than the car’s value.

Toyota Avensis T250 Issues

  • The simple fact that it exists. This living, rolling monument of boredom and conformity in society annoys me. Don’t stand out, don’t freak out. Don’t think. Don’t do anything.

  • It’s a Toyota so I have to talk about the complementary steering column which comes with various issues on the Toyota Avensis T250, so expect anything from a simple sensor to the entire system.

  • The headlight socket melts and in this way the entire headlight has to be replaced because buying another bulb won’t help if you have nowhere to mount it. In other words, it’s futile to sleep with your back to the wall, if you sleep with your mouth open.

  • Petrol engines with a significant mileage start drinking oil. We are talking about engines that exceed 300000 kms, but most Toyota Avensis T250 owners will be long dead by the time they reach that mileage.

Toyota Avensis T250 Verdict

If you couldn’t care less about cars and you don’t want to care in the near future, the Toyota Avensis T25 is a very good car for you. A car that doesn’t express anything, a car that just gets you from A to B with great fuel economy and legendary reliability. If all you are interested in a car is practicality, but you still want something safer and more expensive than a Dacia Logan, then the Toyota Avensis T25 is the safest purchase on the used market at the moment. A safe choice, with which you stay within the parameters of society. Because living is bad and dangerous.

What engine do I recommend? If you couldn’t care less about engines too, then go for the 2.0 D-4D 115 horsepower engine. If you want a spacious, reliable, fast and economical car, take the 1.8 VVT-i 129 hp petrol engine.
