With the original 5008 the garlic lovers didn’t impress us at all and reminded us why French cars aren’t the most popular. But Peugeot 5008 P87 came and changed the game, leaving us with our underpants swollen with excitement.
Basically Stellantis stuck to the family recipe, and Peugeot 5008 P87 is the 3008’s 7 seater cousin, or a taller 508 or a posher Grandland. It all depends on how you look at it and from which angle you take it, as all of them are built on the same platform. The major difference this time between 5008 and 3008 is that 5008 comes standard with 7 seats and is a bit longer than 3008, so the seats in the back are not just thrown in for fun.
And this has been reflected in the car market, aka the real world because at the time of writing this article, there were about 1700 Peugeot 3008s for sale and about 420 blaze it Peugeot 5008s. And you don’t need to be a graduate of the University of Chaviness and Street Smarts to realize that nowadays the minivan is a bit retired because if you want 7 seats, you will buy an SUV, so the 3008 does the same thing as the 5008, only cheaper.
Peugeot 5008 P87 Engines
Petrol
- 1.2 Turbo EB2DTS PureTech with 130 horsepower – No. Not necessarily because it’s dependent on oil and high-quality petrol like how I’m dependent on Karuan, but because Peugeot 5008 P87 comes only as a 7 seater, and this engine is simply not enough for the job at hand.
- 1.6 Turbo EP6CDTM with 165 and 180 horsepower – No. Not necessarily because it has the timing chain issues with which the Little Prince has accustomed us, but because it doesn’t fit with the vacation trip character of the 5008, and I seriously doubt that anyone looks at a Peugeot 5008 P87 and thinks, “mmm, yes, this is the car I want to potter around the city in.” Although, I have to admit that at the time of writing this article, there were 335 Peugeot 5008 P87s with this engine for sale on mobile.de.
Diesel
- 1.5 BlueHDi DV5 with 130 horsepower – Yes, this is a relatively underpowered for the body of 5008 because it lacks horsepower but atleast it has some torque. I would recommend it only if you know you won’t use those rear seats too often. By the same logic, I would rather recommend a 3008. You’d be much better off.
- 2.0 HDi DW10 with 150 and 180 horsepower – The only reason they launched the 5008 and the only engine that realistically deserves to be bought. A 2 litre, 4 cylinder, 180 horsepower engine – like any offer from any manufacturer that has a 2 litre 4-cylinder diesel in its portfolio, does its job decently and with dignity, especially when used for vacations and very long trips with endless queues at toll booths. Just don’t drive it too often in the city because you’ll have issues with the particle filter, EGR, and flywheel.
Peugeot 5008 P87 Reliability Issues
- Peugeot 5008 P87 stands halfway between a minivan and an SUV because it has the dimensions of an SUV, the appearance of an SUV but lacks the 4×4. Yep, front-wheel drive only. And now I should rant, but nowadays, do you really need 4×4, given that for 99% of people the idea of off-road is a forest road and possibly going over a puddle? I’d say snow too, but realistically, how much snow do we have in our little Britain? Two weeks a year? And the roads towards a skiing resort in Europe are usually cleaned as soon and as much as possible? And the typical 5008 driver won’t go off-road or drive on snowy paths but will stay at a family oriented hotel?.
- The automatic gearbox comes standard and is reliable, but don’t forget to change its oil every 4 years or 60,000 km.
- It’s still too new to discuss about, but Peugeot 5008 is more packed with technology than Graham Norton is packed with muscles, so you may encounter constant minor electrical gremlins.
- And now comes the complementary moment about the AdBlue system on diesel engines, a system that must have AdBlue at all times, or else the engine won’t start. So, constantly check the AdBlue level and keep a few bum barrels with you.
- It’s not the most popular Peugeot possible, so some parts will probably only be available from the original manufacturer so it will hurt from time to time.
Peugeot 5008 P87 Verdict
Peugeot 3008 is a very stylish car and is what we want these days from a car. But the 5008? 5008 is a very niche car. It’s not good at everything, but it’s exceptional for vacations. It has space, power, technology, looks, and is surprisingly reliable. So, if you’re still looking for a midsize minivan-SUV-can’t tell, Peugeot 5008 P87 is one of the best options currently available. For the rest, there’s 3008.
Which engines do I recommend? For petrol, apparently, there were people who bought the 1.2 Turbo with 130 horsepower, but still, make an effort and buy the 1.6 Turbo version. But by far the most suitable and in-character engine is the 180 horsepower 2.0 HDi diesel.
